Camp: Notes on Fashion, MET Costume Institute of New York

What does “camp” mean? If you look for the translation on any English-Italian dictionary you will come across exaggerated and effeminate. Susan Sontag, curator of this extraordinary exhibition, gives us concrete and precise examples to explain what this word means: “the Scopitone films, the Tiffany lamps, the Brown Derby restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, the drawings by Aubrey Beardsley, Swan Lake, the works of Bellini, Salome directed by Visconti, King Kong by Schoedsack, the clothes of women in the 20s and the porn movies watched without desire”. Camp: Notes on Fashion is an exhibition entirely dedicated to the interpretation of this concept so historic and so current, an imaginary contained in the Gucci collections created by an artistic pioneer such as Alessandro di Michele, or those of the avant-garde Comme des Garçons and Rei Kawakubo, or in the looks of the stars Lady Gaga and Rihanna, in queer programs like RuPaul’s Drag Race. 175 pieces that will include men’s and women’s clothing, as well as paintings, drawings and sculptures, all orchestrated by Belgian stage designer Jan Versweyveld. The first part of the tour will accompany visitors to discover the origins of the Camp, while the latter will illustrate it through the work of contemporary designers including Miuccia Prada and Demna Gvasalia, for a total of about 37 International names.

Who says that Venice = only Venice Biennale 2019? Of course, that was already on the agenda, but there is more to see in the eternal city on the water. The greatest art collector of all time … Finally an exhibition is dedicated to Peggy Guggenheim, in particular in the Venetian moment of her life. We are in 1948, after Peggy left New York and closed her famous gallery-museum that housed the masterpieces of the century. This special unpublished exhibition, open from September 21, 2019 to January 27, 2020 at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, will present a selection of paintings, sculptures and works of art that the famous Guggenheim has purchased for the love of art from the 40s to the 80s. Unmissable for true lovers of twentieth century painting.

There is no visit to the Big Apple without a stop at MOMA. “Is there art in a broom? Yes, says the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, if it was designed both from the point of view of utility and aesthetics “. This quote, taken from a review of the 1953 on The Times, summarizes the concept of “design” according to the MOMA, one of the largest museums in the world. What can be defined as good design and how can it improve everyday life? Thus, the New York museum comes alive with furniture, household items, home appliances, sporting goods, toys and much more in vogue between the 30s and the 50s, for the exhibition The Value of Good Design (February 10 – May 27, 2019). Among the FIAT 500 series made in Italy, the cars of the Soviet era produced in Germany, a Brazilian kitchen chair, Japanese prints and sewing machines … Design in its purest form, combining functionality and image. TO BE SEEN.
