The console table is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture, which has been able to adapt and change shape over the centuries, always remaining able to reflect the fashion of the time. It is a simple and minimalist piece of furniture, sometimes underestimated, that actually fits well into any environment. Decorative and functional, the console table is capable of enhancing an anonymous corner of the house. It is space-saving when closed but it can be transformed into a large table, in traditional materials such as wood or innovative ones such as plastic and metal.

Everything you don’t know about the console

The term console table is still a bit tricky today, despite the fact that it is a piece of furniture with a long history behind it: the console table originated in France in the 16th century. Its origin is recalled in its very name: it was an object destined for the homes of the most aristocratic families of the ancien régime, where it made a fine impression in their receptionrooms. It was a small shelf with a long, narrow shape, resting on two legs, sometimes a corner piece suspended from the wall. It was used to place valuable objects on it: clocks, mirrors, refined ornaments.

Even in its modern version, the console table presents itself as a versatile, beautiful and practical element considering its space-saving vocation. It can be easily combined with any style of décor: from minimalist to retro.

Console table: better fixed or convertible?

There are different types of consoles: fixed, convertible, extendable.
Fixed consoletable: is useful at the hall, as a change tray for keys and wallets or as a general shelf. In addition, it gives the most original furnishings a stylish touch at first glance. In this case, the long side can be leaned against the wall.
Convertible or extendable console table: it is ideal in the living room, as a furnishing solution where space does not allow for a dining room with fixed tables. It can operate with a split topor a folding top, or be equipped with additional tops, contained within the structure or external.

In large flats, the console table is often chosen as a complementary element to a fixed table, to be used when there are guests. While, normally, it serves as a countertop in the entrance hall. In smaller homes, on the other hand, the console table can become a primary table, perhaps for a single person who often dines out or rarely hosts large numbers of people.

Console table: which style to choose

If there is a truly versatile piece of furniture, it is certainly the console table. This is also confirmed by the wide choice of completely different styles:

Classic console table. Generally made of wood. This is often made of varnished or waxed wood, sometimes with a patinated or waxed finish. Thanks to its essential shapes, it easily integrates into any kind of décor.

Scandinavian console table. Almost always made of light wood, laminate or white lacquer, with smooth, flared legs, it gives the room a natural, essential and warm character. The light, bright colours and functional, minimalist shapes make it particularly suitable for Zen-style furnishing.

Designer console table. With its sleek and essential lines, it fits into a contemporary and modern interior. Its original shape catches the eye and turns it into a real decorative object. Often made of metal or glass with a slim frame, it is the most suitable console table for a refined home. An good example is the Bontempi Hip Hop console with lacquered steel frame and crystal top.

Baroque console table. Gilded, black or in shimmering colours, it contributes to an elegant and refined atmosphere. Often turned and with generous curves, it usually has engraved decorations. It recalls the original models, which appeared in France during the 16th century. A model inspired by the retro aesthetic is the Bontempi Vanity : a desk with mirror and adjustable light, mirror only or desk only. Frame and decorative details (feet, drawer handle and mirror and light supports) in lacquered steel. Melamine top and drawer.

Industrial console. Made mainly of light or stained wood or raw metal, it is suitable for all industrial loft-style furnishings. Simple or sophisticated, it is available in many versions. Decorated with stenciled numbers or letters to recall old recycled wooden crates, it is very fashionable and comes in an infinite number of designs. As original as few is the Bontempi Taylor console table, a lacquered steel desk with a leather-covered top.
